Tim Nicely

Tim was born in Waynesboro, VA on March 4, 1969. He started playing piano at the age of 8 when his grandmother, June Kaylor, taught him the basic notes and chords. Although playing piano remained a hobby throughout childhood, Tim didnít really focus on music until after graduating from Bridgewater College in 1991. He and his brother, Jeff Nicely, formed a garage band (actually a living room band) that played under various names all over the greater Grottoes metropolitan area, from Harriston to Briery Branch. From 1993-2005, Tim played with several country bands; most notably the Spellbound Band where he played with Larry Kyger. During this time, Tim was part of groups that opened shows for several major artists, including Trace Adkins, Ricky Van Shelton, Mark Wills, Cyndi Thomson, and Mark McGuinn.
After taking a 5-year break from music, when much time was spent coaching his sonís Little League Baseball and AAU Basketball teams, Tim joined Southern Grace in 2010. Tim attends Grottoes Church of the Brethren, where he has been a member since 1982. Tim has a B.S. from Bridgewater College, where he also played baseball and was an all-conference pitcher. He has a M.S. from Old Dominion University and an Advanced Graduate Certification in Leadership from the University of Virginia, and currently works as Human Resources Director for Blue Ridge Community College. Tim lives in Grottoes, VA with his wife Becky, and son Austin.

Joe Shifflett

Joe is a native of The Shenandoah Valley, moved away to Richmond, VA for a few years but returned home to pursue other interests. He has been interested in, as well as performing all types of music since childhood, he became interested in drums and percussion after his Mother took him to a parade and after hearing the drum line in a marching band.
After seeing and hearing that, he decided that playing drums would be a part of his life forever! He has played all types of music ranging from rock and roll, jazz, big band, contemporary Christian as well as southern gospel with various artists. In addition to performing with Southern Grace, he presently plays with several Worship Teams at Harrisonburg First Church Of The Nazarene.
When the men of Southern Grace asked him to come join the group there was no hesitation, he knows that Southern Grace is not just a Gospel group it's a brotherhood--it's hard to put into words. He says yeah it's music and he loves most all music but playing all over with these guys, in Churches and other Christian events is more than playing, it's a blessing.
